Our Age Groups and Development

Hug Bug Playschool caters for little ones from 15 months to 4 years of age. Should you feel your little one is ready to start at an earlier age, we are happy to accommodate them, provided they can walk.

Our little ones remain at Hug Bug until the end of the calendar year in which they turn 4. We believe that every stage of early childhood plays an important role in a child's development, and that allowing them to complete their time at Hug Bug provides a strong foundation for their transition to “big” school.

Why completing their time at Hug Bug is so important:

• Building confidence and independence:

As children grow, they become the older and more experienced Hug Buggies. This helps them develop confidence, independence and a sense of responsibility, while the younger children learn through observing and interacting with them.

• Individual attention and care:

Younger children require more supervision and individual attention. Our small, intimate environment allows us to understand each child's needs and provide support appropriate to their stage of development.

• A dedicated classroom for the older Hug Buggies:

During the year they turn 4, our older Hug Buggies move into their own classroom, where activities can be tailored to their developmental needs and the skills they need in preparation for “big” school.

• Age-Appropriate Equipment:

Our outdoor equipment is suitable for the different age groups. All our Hug Buggies are encouraged to explore and enjoy the equipment, with our youngest little ones receiving assistance when needed. This helps build their confidence, coordination and physical development.

• Developing essential skills:

Each year at Hug Bug builds on the previous one, helping children strengthen their confidence, social skills, coordination, problem-solving abilities and independence before moving on to their next chapter.

Growing at their own pace:

We work individually with each child, observing their developmental milestones and providing activities suited to their age, abilities and stage of development. Every child develops at their own pace, and our small, intimate playschool allows us to recognise each little one's progress and identify opportunities for further growth.

We encourage our Hug Buggies to try new things, develop their skills and discover what they can accomplish independently, while always providing guidance and support when needed.

By staying at Hug Bug until the end of the year they turn 4, children have the opportunity to benefit from the full programme, build on the skills they have developed and enter “big” school with a stronger foundation for their continued learning and growth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the size of the school, and what is the child-to-adult ratio?

Hug Bug Playschool is a small, intimate school with a maximum of 30 children per day and a maximum ratio of 5 children per adult. This allows us to focus on each child's individual needs and provide personal attention, care and support.

2. What about potty training?

Being in a social environment allows little ones to learn from and be inspired by their fellow Hug Buggies who are already potty trained. We introduce the potty gently, starting with simply sitting on it and helping children become comfortable with the process.

We encourage and support each little one at their own pace, without pressure. Potty training works best when parents and our staff work together as a team, providing consistency and encouragement both at school and at home.

3. How do we communicate with parents?

We believe that parents and teachers are a team, and regular communication is an important part of your little one's journey at Hug Bug Playschool.

We have two Hug Bug Playschool WhatsApp groups: one for important school information and announcements, and another where we share lots of cute pictures of your little one's daily adventures.

We also provide developmental reports twice a year, in June and December, highlighting your child's progress, development and interests.

4. What safety and security measures are in place?

The safety and security of our Hug Buggies are of the utmost importance. Our property is equipped with CCTV cameras, and a gate guard with a panic button is present during daily drop-off and pick-up times. CAP patrol vehicles are always in close proximity, allowing for an armed response should a panic button be activated.

All staff members have completed a first-aid course specialising in children. We are committed to providing a safe, secure and well-supervised environment where your little ones can learn, play and grow with confidence.

Snack Time

Please remember to pack a healthy snack for your Hug Buggie each day. We are always present and closely supervise the children during snack time, as some of our little ones still require assistance. Please rest assured that we are very vigilant and take great care to minimise the risk of choking.
